One line of thought I've heard is that perhaps Johann's father Justus is actually the genesis for the legend, and was in the Prussian Army, or perhaps a Hessian Soldier. Since even less is known about Justus, this could be hard to track down. The listings of Hessian soldiers does contain a couple of men names Justus Wilhelm. One is far too young. The other is old enough, although he's listed as being born in 1743 or 1744, whereas "our" Justus was born in 1735, although I've not seen anything to confirm that date. {| !
